Founded:
Western Benton County was a part of the Fayetteville District in 1889 and was served by Circuit Riding Preachers from the Bloomfield Circuit. There were no regular services but the circuit riders were missionaries to the area. The town of Gravett was platted 1893 and a congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church South was organized. The first church was a frame structure. They laid the cornerstone on October 2, for the first church building in Gravett. A fire in the early 1900's prompted the city to pass an ordinance that all business buildings be constructed of brick.
The cornerstone for the current building was laid on September 7, 1907. The Gravette church was paired with the Decatur church in 1913 and then with the Sulphur Springs church in 1960. In 2015, we were once again paired with the Decatur church.
Historical note about the spelling of Gravette:
The town was named for J. I. Gravett, but when the U.S. Post Office was opened, they insisted the name be spelled Gravette to not be confused with another town.
